Clare claims German citizenship.

But her grandad Heinz gave it up...

Is it really hers to take?

london, 2023

two true stories, 90 years apart

“Don’t go home. The Gestapo are in your apartment.

They are waiting for you to come back.

Do you have your passport?”

What would you do if your country was taken from you?

In post-Brexit London, Clare reclaims her grandad Heinz's stolen citizenship,

& plunges into his extraordinary true story, facing questions like:

Is Heinz’s citizenship hers to take?

Is Britain the same country he fell in love with years ago?

And if the place your family came from is no longer there, who are you?

This play takes a deep dive through the cabaret of 1930s Berlin,
being an

'enemy alien' in 1940s Britain, via Hollywood, air raids, & getting arrested by everyone from the Soviets to Winston Churchill...

A vivid account of one Jewish refugee trying to find his way home, and his granddaughter trying to find her roots.

‘I Was A German’ explores Britishness, displacement and the enduring fight against Fascism, whilst never being able to resist a good party.

Vibrantly and playfully told with light, shadow and projections

in collaboration with Shadowboxer Theatre,

directed by Lowri James,

music by Arran Glass,

movement direction by Louise Kempton
